Wednesday introduced the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Electric Pickup Truck with a starting price of $39,974, up to 300 miles of range, 563 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque, four-wheel drive and, most importantly, capabilities. Although Ford doesn’t disclose the two battery sizes, it still packs all the cells in an under-cab package between the rack rails. Unlike almost every other electric truck to hit the market that rides on a sled-like chassis, the Lightning uses a modified F-150 gas-powered tire. The cross members of the frame have been moved and shaped differently to allow the beam to be as wide as needed. The package has its own exoskeleton and looks like a large flat rectangle that sits on the F-150’s cockpit floor, although the extended package adds a longer section aft.
A three- or four-engine configuration will not be offered, but Ford said the Lightning is faster than the Raptor and will run from 0-60 mph in the mid-range of 4 seconds on the long-range battery. An off-road Raptor with 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque from a V-6 biturbo engine sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and 2022 should be faster.
