2022 BMW X1. BMW is testing a redesigned X1 crossover that will be on sale next year. According to prior rumors, the revised X1 was supposed to be a 2023 model, but the mid-cycle upgrade will coincide with the 2022 BMW X1. The new model will bring small changes front and rear, as with most mid-range updates, while changes inside the cabin should be more subtle. Small front-wheel-drive crossovers should also bring back engine options with the same number of cylinders with possible additional hybrid introduction. More details will appear near the release date.
2022 BMW X1 Powertrain Options
The engine range of the new 2022 BMW X1 will again consist of 3 and 4 cylinders depending on market. No details on performance yet, but the power range should be between 116 and 230 hp. The American version will again have a Turbo-4 unit with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a standard two-wheel drive. All-wheel drive will also be available, but some sources suggest a new engine option of under 200 hp.
BMW could also offer a plug-in hybrid version. The X1 version in China has a configuration with a 1.5-liter inline 3 turbo engine and an electric motor on the rear axle.

The new 2022 BMW X1 will bring some visual refreshment and there will be no drastic changes. The typical version has a circular camouflage on the front and rear profiles, while the profile remains undisguised. Obviously, the usual changes in the middle of an update will appear with the new version. The model will get the new headlights and taillights, but both appear to have the same look that changes the interior style.
The kidney grille version also changes in line with the latest high-wheel drive models in the range, and the front bumper is part of the update. The rear bumper will also have a slightly redesigned shape, but the first BMW crossover in the range will not radically change the design.
2022 BMW X1 Inside Design
In terms of interior design and available equipment, the revised X1 will also be in line with the brand’s recently revised models. The model should have the new steering wheel, gear lever and iDrive system. A slightly larger center display should appear and BMW could add a new digital instrument cluster as well. Expect a rearview camera and automatic emergency braking to become standard equipment as well.

The new 2022 BMW X1 will debut in early 2023 with a sale date next fall. A slight increase in the price range is expected. The base version will remain close to $34,000.

BMW is moving ahead with the development of the next generation X1 SUV, and prototypes have now been seen being tested at the Nürburgring. The third entry-level SUV will be a very important model for the brand when it goes on sale in 2022 – the current version accounts for more than 12 percent of all BMW SUV sales, second only to the X3. SUV range, with over 260,000 sold in 2019.
The latest spy photos show a car wearing camouflage ahead of its official unveiling, but many details of the vehicle, as featured in our exclusive rendering, are clearly visible to see. The overall look is more impressive than the current car, and is achieved through features such as sharper headlights and a larger vertical grille. Along the sides, the upcoming X1 has a flatter window line, a more vertical rear hatch, and shorter bezels. All this points to a stronger and more SUV-like appearance of the second generation of the X1, which will help distinguish it further from the coupe-influenced X2.
Internal updating should be much simpler. BMW will likely introduce the new interior engineering used in the latest 1 Series, so expect a more angular key fob and air vent design, as well as the latest infotainment technology, including a fully digital instrument panel.
The new X1 will almost certainly use an updated version of the existing car’s UKL2 platform. You can expect the engine range to remain very similar, starting with the front-wheel-drive sDrive versions using a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder, developing 138 horsepower and priced at just over £30,000. Diesel will likely remain on the list as well, especially for buyers of the all-wheel drive xDrive versions.
The xDrive25e plug-in hybrid will continue, but BMW’s top priority will be developing an all-electric version to compete with the Mercedes EQB. The brand has confirmed that the new model, called the iX1, will continue following the afterburner version with its launch in 2023.
BMW has already revealed an electric version of the larger X3 called the iX3, with a maximum range of 285 miles on a single charge thanks to an 80 kWh battery. The all-electric iX1 will likely borrow a 282-horsepower electric motor for that car, but given the packaging limitations of a smaller platform, the iX1’s battery size will likely be limited to a smaller trim.

The BMW X1 is already one of the most attractive options in the compact crossover segment, and it seems that the designers will increase the wow factor for the next-generation model. New prototypes of the redesigned X1 have been spotted, revealing some new design features. The fitting rooms are still at a relatively early stage judging by the temporary lights and interior fixtures, which makes sense since the new X1 will only be released as a 2023 model. This means that the showroom appearance should be in the second half of 2022, at the earliest.
Even at this stage of development, we can already see that the redesigned X1 will take on a bolder, more brutal look than the current model thanks to the wide, shark-nose grille. The remaining design appears to be an evolution of the current model, although the Hofmeister kink appears to be more vertical, adding to the sturdiness of the design. The platform is the latest front-wheel drive architecture from the BMW Group designed for compact cars, known as FAAR. The platform debuted in 2019 in a redesigned Class 1 hatchback sold overseas and has since appeared in the Series 2 Gran Coupe released for 2022.
The FAAR platform is an update to the existing UKL platform that supports the current X1. The biggest change is the choice of battery electric motors. Yes, an X1 electrical device likely works with an iX1 badge. It is one of at least 13 battery-electric models that the BMW Group will offer across all of its brands by the end of 2023.
Other powertrain options should carry over from the current X1, i.e. a series of 1.5-liter, 3-liter and 4-liter sequential engines, all of which are turbocharged. Mild hybrid technology will likely become a standard feature, and an additional hybrid setup will likely be offered with the 1.5-liter engine again. We don’t have the current X1 Hybrid plug-in, but a next generation version may be available locally.
Front-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be available. Probably the only transmission will be an 8-speed automatic. Don’t hold your breath for the BMW M X1 M, but something similar to the 302 hp X2 M35i is possible. It will be a great replacement for the new Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA35 and GLB35.
