Owning a wide range of SUVs is critical to the success of an automobile manufacturer in today’s market. Significantly, in fact, many companies offer tickets that blur the line between departments. Check out Toyota, where they introduce the new 2022 Corolla Cross with small SUV to bridge the gap between the compact C-HR and the compact RAV4. However, unlike the modern front-wheel drive C-HR, the more traditional Corolla Cross has an important mechanical advantage: the availability of all-wheel drive.
The family’s outward appearance
Another advantage is its traditional design. Look at the front end of the Corolla Cross, and the first car that comes to mind is Toyota’s RAV4. That’s part of the strategy, as pairing this smaller SUV with its very popular older brother gives the Corolla Cross a sense of familiarity. It also lends a strong stance, while the black plastic body cladding helps ensure that the Corolla is not confused with anything other than an SUV. The front end lends some stiffness to the steep, angry headlights and the way the bumper lights up to meet the wheel arches, too.
In profile, the design is elegant enough, with the visual interest provided by opposing “arrows” carved into the belt line. These also form the distinctive lines of the Corolla Cross, the back of which helps create a wider, more mature look. The taillights are identical to those on the RAV4, and dummy skid plates are added at the front and rear.
The Corolla Cross shares the overall interior design of the Corolla sedan. The “floating” center console houses a 7.0- or 8.0-inch touch screen, as well as HVAC controls, while leaving a small space underneath for stashing various belongings. Depending on convenience, drivers get a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster that replaces the analog speedometer with a digital unit. The interior space should be enough for five passengers and the cargo area should be one of the most spacious in this segment.
There are three versions available: L, LE and XLE. Surprisingly, rear air vents are standard across the range, and the LE and XLE models add two USB ports for the rear passengers. The L model has 17-inch steel wheels and hubcaps with rental fleet specifications, while the LE and XLE models have 18-inch aluminum wheels. Other options include a power sunroof, two-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front seats, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support.
Regardless of fit, all models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the LE and XLE add wireless charging. A nine-speaker JBL sound system that includes Amazon Alexa functionality is also available.
As its name suggests, the compact Corolla Cross shares many of its basics with the Corolla sedan. Both use the TNGA-C platform. Meanwhile, the optional Corolla 2.0-liter L-4 is standard on the Corolla Cross, delivering the same 169 horsepower in the SUV as it does in the Corolla sedan and hatchback. Toyota has yet to reveal torque numbers for the Corolla Cross, but we expect them to be in line with the 150 lb-ft of 2.0 liters that power some Corolla models. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard across the Corolla Cross model line.
This is all very good, but as mentioned, the most important thing about the Corolla Cross is that it will be available with all-wheel drive, which will allow Toyota to compete adequately against similarly sized SUVs as the Honda HR. V, Kia Seltos and Subaru Crosstrek. Toyota claims the Corolla Cross’s all-wheel drive system can send up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels when needed. Toyota estimates that AWD-equipped Corolla Cross models will return up to 30 mpg combined, and the front-wheel drive variants will return an estimated 32 mpg.
AWD rims also have an independent rear suspension instead of the torsion bar setup on front-wheel drive models. Every Corolla crossover is rated to tow up to 1,500 pounds, which isn’t a lot, but it’s better than nothing.
Like nearly all Toyotas these days, the new Corolla Cross comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and more. The LE and XLE add Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and the XLE comes with Rear Parking Aid and Automatic Rear Braking.
The Corolla Cross is already available in some global markets, such as Brazil, but the version we’ll get here in the US is a little different than meeting our own federal safety regulations. It will be built at the Toyota/Mazda joint plant in Alabama.
We expect the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross for the US market to arrive in US showrooms in October. Pricing will be available near the sale date, but expect this small SUV to start at around $23,000.
