Travis Pastrana revealed the first details of the planned expansion of the Nitro series for 2020 at this year's X Games event in Utah. The new course at the Utah Motorsports Park is what sets it apart from the rest of the already existing rallycross events: high-banked jumps and dirt-laden curves.
In fact, the only cars allowed to participate in the events are rally cars, which is why the venue was named after the famous racer John Ford. “This is the place to race,” Pastrana said, as he sat down next to me in the stands. “The only way you're going to beat it is to build your own car.” So how does the team at Utah Motorsports Park go about designing such a unique car?
The team starts with the engine. They build a special chassis, which allows the driver to take full advantage of the air pressure created by the nitrous system. The exhaust system, meanwhile, creates a low pressure system, allowing the driver to change direction rapidly without losing control. They also have an option for changing between three different gears, allowing the driver to switch between smooth and aggressive driving.
The other key characteristic of the Nitro series is the chassis, which is designed for power. Since the cars are driven over rough terrains, the team made sure that the chassis is durable and strong enough to withstand the impact. The suspension and shock absorbers also follow strict regulations; the driver can adjust the system based on his preference and the track conditions.
For the suspension, the team at Utah Motorsports Park built on the technology used for the bodywork. Instead of the standard coilover system, the team opted for a high-performance one, which allows the driver to control the car's movement at any angle. In addition, the chassis uses Bilstein shocks, which offer better feedback than conventional suspension systems.
This is only the beginning, however, as the rally car design team is still working out the best way to make its cars look as real as possible. They need to create a complete body kit, including a full body kit and body shell. For now, all the team is planning to do is to make a few modifications to the engine, so that they can drive the actual vehicle on the race track.
Although it looks like a lot of work, this type of rally cross might very well become the future of racing. With the help of the high-tech car kits, the rally team will be able to produce cars that are capable of doing everything that a real rally car could: winning, dominating, and beating the competition.
