Winward Racing is in the midst of its second full year with Winward Racing at the top-level Grand Sport (GS) category in its premier class after running a limited schedule in the past year. Winward Racing's pole position for the four-hour Tioga Raceway Casino Resort 240 race on Saturday, April 9th is the second highest of this season after Owen Trinkler placed the highest finish of the year to take the lead of the category.
The race is scheduled to be held on a Friday evening at the Tioga Raceway Casino Resort located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The race will begin on the third lap of the night and be aired live on FS1 and FS2. A live replay can also be accessed online. Winward Racing is offering the first place driver a free trip to the Rolex 24 Hours of Le Mans in July, and additional free tickets are also available.
Winward Racing's leading driver, Andretti Autosport driver Dario Franchitti, was in attendance for this weekend's race. As was teammate Franchitti's father Michael. Both drivers will take advantage of free track time during Winward's official test day, which is set to begin at 8am local time on Friday. If both drivers are able to successfully complete the scheduled test, they will be allowed to run the race in Winward Racing cars.
Winward Racing will be running two cars at the event: the #3 Ford Mustang and the #9 Lamborghini Huracán. Franchitti's car, the #3, is currently leading the championship points by three hundred and fifty-one points, but he must first beat the rest of the field in the second race of this championship to take the championship. Winning all four races in the series would then earn him the championship.
Franchitti's competitor is reigning champion Scott Speed, who is competing in this week's Winward Racing Championship for the fourth year in a row. The Lamborghini Huracán is the favorite to take the title this time around, especially after winning last year's championship. Speed has won the last two championships, and is aiming to become the youngest champion ever in Winward Racing's fourteen-year history. The win will also provide Speed with a free trip to the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in his career.
In winning this Winward Racing championship, Winward Racing will earn a place in the finals of the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Trophy presented by Toyota. Winward Racing is making their return to the race tracks of Le Mans as a full-time team and will now be joined by two more of its American-based teams.
